Movies From Back in the Day: Adult Horror Films Viewed as a Kid

Of course I am going to be doing a horror movie post for October!
There have been plenty of movies that have scared me over the years, but this collection is "adult audience" (not camp or satire or kid's horror) genuine horror movies that I saw before hitting puberty, so they had a particularly strong impact on me.

1.) JAWS

So, the first time I saw this movie was shortly after I turned 5 - yes, FIVE.  The scene that upset me the most was this one:

I woke up drenched in sweat and screaming my lungs out having nightmares of this scene.  I ended up sleeping on the couch for a week before I finally stopped dreaming about being eaten by a giant shark.
Awesome.

2.) Flatliners

My mom loved this movie and this was a favorite to watch on rainy days while sat in her favorite chair knitting something.

3.) Hellraiser

To this day, the cenobites are some of the scariest creatures ever.  If you're wondering "what the hell was that girl doing watching such a movie when she was 9 years old?" - well, now so am I, actually.  But hey.

Chucky doesn't need batteries! Was there anything creepier than this in 1988?  Not for me there wasn't.  Especially with my brother running around with his damn "My Buddy" doll.  Oy.
The trauma of childhood.

What 'grown-up' movies scared the crap out of you?

  1. Jaws scared the shit out of me then... and it still does now. Reason why my ass don't go too far out into the ocean.

    1. I'm always thinking: between riptide and sharks and jellyfish and other things, the ocean wants to eat me, dammit.

  2. I only watched Jaws for the first time about three years ago (sad I know) so I found it funny BUT that would so scare the crap out of a five year old so I get why you slept on the couch for a week. I loved the Hell Raiser movies! Mind you I would be too chicken to see them now. Evil Dead was one I watched with my Dad when I was young and that gave me a fright. My bestie and I would have horror movie nights we always watched The Crow and Candy Man and It, to this day I hate clowns. And I was afraid to go to the toilet for a while because of bees... And then more recently 0r a few years back the last horror movies I watched where The Ring (both of them) and The Skeleton Key with Kate Hudson that gave me nightmares as a grown up and I have not been able to watch a horror film since then. I am a big baby with Horror these days. Never ever watched the Chucky movies. A talking doll that kills? Too scary for this baby!

    1. I should say WHY I find Jaws funny. It isn't seriously funny it is just the special effects I laugh at. Since watching all the Jaws movies I have not so much as dipped a toe in the ocean... And I may be checking the toilet for bees now I am thinking about the Candy Man

    2. I actually watched Jaws with my hubby last year (his first viewing too,) and I found it hilarious this time around - especially Quint getting killed. I do love horror films and always have; I actually thought about putting "It" on the list, but I figured I'd save it for another movie list, like a Stephen King collection or something. :)

    1. So weird - I wasn't terribly impressed with either of these back in the day...but I first saw them at that "too cool for anything" age of 15; they may scare the pants off me now. :)

  4. I was too sensitive as a kid to be allowed to watch scary movies; I always had nightmares.....I remember being freaked out by the beginning of Michael Jackson's Thriller video when he changes into a werewolf, but could handle the dancing zombies....I'm a total featherweight
